How the Calculator Works

The estimate uses the standard volume formula: length × width × depth, converted to cubic yards (divided by 27). We then convert cubic yards to tons using the typical weight of each material — about 1.5 tons per cubic yard for #53 and #8 crushed limestone, 1.35 for sand, 1.25 for fill dirt, and 1.1 for topsoil. For a quick limestone check, square footage ÷ 81 × 1.5 equals tons needed at 4 inches deep.
